The New Museum was founded in 1977 with the mission to display and foster new art and new ideas. The museum is Manhattan’s only institution dedicated to contemporary art, and it is respected throughout the international art world for its adventurous exhibitions and curatorial program. The museum opened a new building designed by the Japanese firm Sanaa on the Bowery in 2007, and the innovative and beautiful building has been widely praised in the architecture world. From the outside, the building looks like a haphazardly stacked tower of lightweight silver boxes, and the museum uses the built-in ledges for skylights, a deck, and exterior art displays. It’s been said that the New Museum, and its new building, perfectly capture the spirit and culture of the city’s downtown art scene.
General admission is $12, seniors are $10, students are $8, and those under 18 are free.
