Design by Norman Foster of Foster + Partners, Sperone Westwater’s new gallery space on the Bowery is innovative architecture at its finest. The footprint of the building is just 2,500 square feet, so the owners had to build up, instead of out. The result is an eight-story, sunlight filled gallery. But the best part? Foster transformed the building’s freight elevator into a movable room, fit for displaying art. The exterior of the elevator is padded in bright red material, making it visible through the building’s frosted glass facade. Foster created a building that’s just as interesting as the art work inside, and he proved that you really can do more with less.
