Thanks to the owners’ pure and uncompromising love of their product, Van Leeuwen is the best ice cream in the city (and quite possibly the entire country). In February 2010, the company opened its flagship brick-and-mortar location in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, and they opened a second storefront in Boerum Hill a year later. They make their ice cream upstate at Mercer’s Dairy, which is where they get all of their dairy products. Each batch is made from a classic cream, sugar cane, and egg yolk base, with absolutely no hormones, preservatives, or additives. They source their flavors from sustainable producers located all over the world: Sicilian pistachios, red currants from the Hudson Valley, and peppermint from Oregon, just to name a few. They also sell fair trade Intelligentsia coffee and local home-made baked goods. We should thank our lucky stars that the Van Leeuwens are now accessible year round!
