DIRTT Environmental Solutions has created a modular wall system that minimizes construction waste, is easily reconfigurable, and serves as a platform for plug and play sustainable furnishings. They even plan out their projects using custom specification software, so interior designers can re-imagine an interior by shifting walls and ceilings in a video game-like experience.
If an interior designer wants to change an area of a building that has DIRTT systems installed, the would use the software to see in real-time how they could reuse all of the parts they currently have. For example, if a building needed more space for offices, and less reception area, the designer could move walls around, add in doors, and even add phone lines and power to the new spaces created. If additional DIRTT system modules needed to be ordered to accommodate the new plan, the software would instantly tally up the cost of the extra parts.
DIRRT systems can be made to work for residential, commercial, and even healthcare interiors. Special accessories like wall cabinets, murphy beds, or even living plant walls can be added to further customize the spaces. Each space can be perfectly tailored to a client’s needs, and the system can flex and be updated if those needs change. This is a major benefit for large building owners that may have many different types of tenants, or for smaller businesses that need to add on to their systems as they expand.
DIRTT presented many of the possibilities for their system in their booth at Greenbuild 2011 in Toronto. For more innovative green building products, check out our top picks from Greenbuild!
