If you’re a connoisseur of fine wines, then you know that while the bottle can be recycled, the cork often finds its final resting place in the trash can. To make better use of these tiny stoppers, Danny Seo from the craft blog Daily Danny came up with an awesome DIY idea to keep them out of landfills: upcycling the wine corks into a comfy, absorbent, and eco-friendly bath mat.
What You’ll Need:
- 1 shadow box frame
- A few hundred wine corks
If you don’t have a cork collection saved from several years’ worth of wine drinking, you can hit up local restaurants or pubs and ask them for cork donations: they’re more than likely to have many on hand that they can pass your way. Depending on the size of your shadow box, you might need anywhere from 400 to 1000 corks, so don’t hesitate to accept armfuls of them!
To create your mat, just arrange your corks inside the box so they fit snugly. If the box is deep, you can arrange them vertically so their round tops are showing, or you can place them horizontally inside a shallower box.
That’s it! Once you’ve popped the last cork into place, you have a super-absorbent, slip-resistant bath mat.
