Thrift-shopping has shed its plebeian connotations and is now officially a favorite pastime of some of today’s most influential tastemakers. Don’t believe us? Just ask It-Brit Alexa Chung: international fashion darling, Karl Lagerfeld muse, Madewell collaborator, and former host of MTV’s It’s On with Alexa Chung. The 26-year-old style icon is bringing secondhand shopping to the masses with her upcoming PBS series, Thrift America, which will follow her as she unearths the treasures buried in the racks of her favorite vintage stores. Click below the fold for a video sneak peek, along with our compilation of Chung’s handy thrifting do’s and don’ts.

A GOOD VINTAGE

If you want to get started thrift shopping but don’t know where to start, here are some helpful tips à la Chung:

  1. Do invest in a schoolgirl/schoolboy pea coat; it’s an evergreen classic.
  2. Do smell your vintage item before you buy it.
  3. Don’t not wash your find before you wear it.
  4. Don’t be afraid to raid the men’s section. Androgynous can be chic in that Annie Hall way.
