ART IMITATING FASHION

With Amelia’s Magazine, founder and editor Amelia Gregory brought her eye as a textile designer, plus her experience as a photographer and stylist, to create a new kind of publication: one that focuses on fashion, music, and art, as well as the earth. Amelia’s Compendium of Fashion Illustration is her second book, and the first dedicated exclusively to ethical fashion.

The book focuses as much on the illustrators as it does the designers. In addition to their talents, all the artists had to be savvy enough to thrive in our new digital age. “All of them maintain professional websites and regularly updated blogs, actively participate in social networking and contribute regularly to Amelia’s Magazine,” Gregory says of her contributors. “In a tough creative world, it’s absolutely imperative that illustrators get online and find ways to engage with others, and I am very proud that Amelia’s Magazine has a strong community of illustrators who encourage each other and collaborate as a result of meeting in the virtual world.”

Besides the charming artwork, you also get to learn about each illustrator and his or her approach to their art through an in-depth interview. (This writer also had the honor of being drawn by two of them—Jenny Robins and Antonia Makes—at the book’s launch event in London.)

And even if you thought you knew everything about the designers, we guarantee you’ll find a surprising nugget or two, including the fact that Prophetik and Nina Dolcetti’s Spring/Summer 2011 collaboration sprung from a weekend of two-stepping and horse-riding in Tennessee.

Even if you thought you knew everything about the designers, we guarantee you’ll find a surprising nugget or two.

Both beautiful and informative (each profile takes you on a journey through the artist and designer’s creative process), the book is a great conversation starter for anyone’s coffee table, and a place to turn to for inspiration.
