Galahad Clark, owner of Terra Plana, is a passionate environmentalist who guides the company’s mission to create shoes that are good for you and for the world.
His unique heritage as a seventh generation shoemaker from the Clark’s family meant growing up immersed in a world that honored tradition and pushed boundaries of design innovation. As a teenager, he spent summer holidays on various production lines in Europe learning the family’s trade. After finishing school in Somerset, Galahad was offered a Morehead Scholarship at the University of North Carolina where he earned a degree with honors in Chinese and Anthropology. While there he founded "Students 4 Students International," an organization created to help disadvantaged students in Africa go on to university. There are now three such projects thriving around the world.
All the while, Galahad could never quite escape shoe world. His degree led him to Taiwan and China where he studied the language and researched technical shoe production. This rekindled his passion for shoe development and when back in the United States, he designed and developed ‘Wu-Shoes’ for rap/hip-hop trailblazers, Wu Tang Clan.
After returning to the United Kingdom in 2002 to be with his sick mother, Galahad became involved with Terra Plana. The company extolled all the principles that Galahad held dear: a respect for artisan shoe constructions, eco-friendly materials and modern design elements with a twist.
In 2003, Galahad took over the running of Terra Plana and set about transforming the fortunes of the brand, reinventing the product range, and introducing specific new concepts. Every product was designed with a sustainable concept in mind and eco friendly materials. Sustainable design, according to Galahad, is just "good design," products that are efficient, durable, light, enjoyed by users and don’t cause any unnecessary harm.
In 2004, Galahad introduced Vivo Barefoot to Terra Plana, a patented (3mm) puncture-resistant sole that offers a “barefoot” option for everyday. Six years on, the trend is hitting its “tipping point” and Vivo Barefoot has become a one of the leading brands in the category. Known as the original barefoot shoe and called the future of footwear by podiatrists, biomechanics experts, running and function specialists, Vivo Barefoot continues to grow to a full lifestyle collection.
