Bombsheller is a Seattle-based clothing company that produces eye-catching, graphic leggings on-demand with designs created by anyone who has an artistic eye or knack for design. Artists and regular joes alike can create Bombsheller legging designs using the company’s free, online design template. Designers then set their own royalty rate and gain profits from every sale made. The artist’s name and the design name are also printed in every pair of leggings.
“We imagined a fashion company that could produce on-demand so it wouldn’t be hindered by the need to create thousands of the same thing,” Amanda Mohlenhoff, Bombsheller’s media liason, tells Ecouterre. “We wanted it to be more accessible to artists and designers, give designers great creative freedom, and provide more options to customers. We came up with a product and business plan allowing us to create fashions that could be customized in design and automated in production. The result was Bombsheller leggings.”
Created by a diverse group of creatives—a hacker, a salsa dancer, and a blindfolded Rubik’s cube champion, Bombsheller was formed on the basis of applying tech sensibility to the fashion industry. The founders wanted to create a progressive, sustainable solution to overhaul the wasteful ways of the fashion industry. By bringing together technology and fashion-lovers, while emphasizing creative freedom and self-expression, Bombsheller provides a endless creative hub for customizable, satisfying products.
The on-demand production model provides the company with no need for sweatshops or huge production runs. There is no inventory or overstock and production and manufacturing waste is minimal.
“By only manufacturing when we make a sale, we can digitally carry a huge product offering while keeping no inventory and creating no overstock,” Mohlenhoff explains. We can change any aspect of our business in a matter of minutes and we are constantly improving the way we do things.”
The company’s name communicates the founders’ view of a “bombshell”: a woman who taps into her potential from her alluring beauty, power and individuality, and the goal that these beautiful, distinct leggings will make a bombshell out of anyone.
The leggings materials are made from a polyester/spandex blend. Fabrics are sourced from a Bluesign-certified sustainable textile factory in Italy and everything from production, to photography, to marketing is housed in Bombsheller’s Seattle headquarters in a building beneath the Space Needle.
Bombsheller’s online store features a growing collection of masterfully designed leggings ranging from $69 and up in sizes from XS to XL. The company has also been perfecting a new plus-sized leggings line to add to the mix.
“We believe that by uniting the ever-growing list of super powers and with people’s need for self–expression, we can create fashion that is sustainable and better suited to the folks who will wear it,” Mohlenhoff says. “By making use of the tools that technology gives us (like automation, 3D modeling, etc), we can democratize fashion production and eliminate the need for sweatshops, inventory, and wasteful overstock.”
