We’re not exaggerating when we say that Dr. Alkaitis is good enough to eat. The skincare company concocts its certified-organic cleansers, toners, crèmes, and face masks out of mouthwatering ingredients like wild fennel, sweet potato, grapes, strawberries, and olives. Only biologically active ingredients are used, which means you won’t find any synthetic chemicals, genetically modified organisms, or even so-called plant-derived constituents. We had the good fortune of meeting founder Saulius Alkaitis’s granddaughter and in-house rep, Alexandra Conn, at her booth at this year’s Designers & Agents Green Room, and in the interest of science, decided to put the brand’s claims to the (taste) test.

Could the travel kit, which contains the Day Crème, Night Crème, Eye Crème, Purifying Facial Cleanser, Nourishment Treatment Oil, Soothing Gel, Herbal Toner, and one mask, stand up to the rigors of actual travel? On a 10-day trip to southern Japan (including Grandma’s dusty house), the products were nothing short of a godsend, even if SPF had to be layered on separately. The treatment oil soaked into the skin without leaving any shine, while the day and night crèmes hydrated sans irritation.

When we finally mixed up the powdered mask with some water, the swirl of raspberries, grapes, blueberries, blackberries, bilberries, strawberries, and oats looked an awful lot like a milkshake. That’s when we tasted it. Verdict: Surprisingly good; similar to a sugar-free berry yogurt. Oh, and it helped that the mask tightened pores without drying the skin out, too—quite the opposite, in fact.

Dr. Alkaitis doesn’t use water, which means that even a 7ml container can pack a concentrated punch. The products lasted far longer than the 7-to-12-day time frame the company suggests. Weeks later, this writer’s skin is still smooth, supple, and blemish-free. She’s also craving smoothies something bad, but that’s something she can live with.
