Eqo Optics is a small, Colorado-based outfit that transforms battered and broken skateboards into off-the-hook sunglasses. Handmade and finished in the company’s Colorado Springs workshop, each pair of shades preserves the multilayered remains of a deck that has long popped its last ollie. Eqo founders (and skateboarding enthusiasts) Jon Winfrey and Ryan Vecchiarelli saw, sand, and shape the wood into a Wayfarer-inspired silhouette, polishing every piece to a gleam with food-grade resins before inserting stainless-steel hinges and polarized Polaroid lenses.

FLIPPIN’ COOL

Fresh off a successful Kickstarter campaign, Eqo has established a network of local skate shops that are eager to pass along their busted decks. But Winfrey and Vecchiarelli don’t just want to make killer shades. By partnering with organizations like I Ride I Recycle, Grind 4 Life, Bamboo Sk8, Team Pain, and the Tony Hawk Foundation, they’re also striving for a “more sustainable and responsible skate future.”

Have a board you’d like to part with? Eqo will send you a pre-paid box to send it in, along with a token of its appreciation. Pretty slick.
