Static images seldom do runway shows any justice, particularly when they’re as dynamic as Costello Tagliapietra’s Fall/Winter 2012 debut at New York Fashion Week. Watch our exclusive video to dive into the thick of any action you may have missed, from the kaleidoscopic, watercolor-inspired gowns that slid down the catwalk to the declarations of admiration from celebrities such as actress Susan Sarandon and Top Chef host Padma Lakshmi. Ecouterre also snuck backstage, where we chatted with designing duo Jeffrey Costello and Robert Tagliapietra about their “Beetlejuicy, Dr. Seuss-ish” lineup, how AirDye’s water-saving technology trumps standard dyes, and why they’re such champions of femininity and romance.

“I’m always excited by their clothes,” Lakshmi, who was wearing a Costello Tagliapietra skirt, told Ecouterre. “I think they’re both really nice gentlemen and they’ve done a lot for the female form.” Sitting next to her, Sarandon shared her appreciation for the duo’s nontoxic tack. “I like the idea that they use dyes that are not as toxic,” she said. “I think it’s really great to be conscious of that; it’s a plus for me, anyway.”

The contrast between Costello and Taglipietra’s plaid-clad physiques and the ladylike silhouettes they produce wasn’t lost on Fern Mallis, IMG vice president and Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week legend. “They’re such an interesting pair,” she told us. “I like that they’re kind of Smith Brothers in look and attitude and everything and out comes beautiful, draped, fabulous clothing.”

That “fabulous clothing” was fabulous, indeed, with abstract chrysanthemum motifs and playful bursts of colors that were consummately Costello Tagliapietra. Romance was in the air; perhaps the pair’s recent nuptials had something to do with it?
