A “Fashion, Fitness, and Makeup” Girl Scout badge? How very 1987. Taking its place this month is “Science of Style,” part of a new system of achievements that will usher the 3.2 million-member organization into its 100th year. Young women are still drawn to fashion and beauty, according to Suzanne Harper, director of program resources at Girl Scouts of the U.S.A., but they way they relate to the subjects have taken a marked turn.

STYLE FOR A NEW CENTURY

“Twenty years ago, girls who were interested in fashion wanted to be models,” Harper tells Ecouterre. “Ten years ago they said they wanted to be fashion designers. Now they’re interested in STEM [science, technology, engineering, and math], which is expanding their definition of what a career in fashion can be.”

The new award will have girls explore the science behind fabrics, cosmetics, and skincare products.
