The world’s first 100 percent transparent fashion label is launching a first-of-its-kind scholarship for aspiring designers who desire to work in a progressive, socially and environmentally responsible way. The Future Fashion Designer Scholarship, sponsored by Belgium’s Honest By, will award €10,000 in cash to one “exceptional” student who wishes develop his or her Master of Arts collection with sustainability and transparency as cornerstones. Plus, the scholarship recipient will receive mentoring from Bruno Pieters, Honest By’s founder and creative director.
Students from all around the world are welcome to apply from now through August 25. (The winner will be announced in September.) Applicants will be judged on their design skills and technical prowess, not their experience (or lack thereof) of sustainable processes. Although a vegan collection is not required from the winner, the scholarship does ask the recipient to find alternatives for leather, fur, feathers, horn, and shell.
“The FFDS is a dream that I’ve had ever since I launched Honest By two years ago and now we finally made time for it,” Pieters says of the scholarship. “At Honest By we believe that the story behind the design needs to be as beautiful as the design itself. We are convinced that is crucial today to show appreciation and support those students who share this philosophy.”
True change can only happen if we encourage the students of today to challenge the “existing fashion mold,” Pieters says. “That is what we want to do with the FFDS,” he adds.
