“The Clean Tee is made from the world’s finest, softest, strongest recycled cotton yarns,” Nomadix said in a statement. “It’s also the lowest impact textile yarn on the planet from a water and chemical consumption standpoint.”

The company has the numbers to back it up: It can take 2,700 liters of water and a third of a pound of pesticides to grow the cotton in a single T-shirt, according to the World Wildlife Fund.

The Clean Tee, on the other hand, taps into a Global Recycle Standard– and Oeko-Tex–certified closed-loop process that starts with the collection of textile off-cuts and used clothing “all over the planet.”

Once sorted, the cotton waste undergoes a patented color-matching process that creates blends without the need for additional water or dyes. The fibers are mixed with recycled polyester (derived from the aforementioned plastic bottles) and spun into yarn, which is eventually woven into fabric and cut and sewn into garments.

“The apparel industry is the second most polluting industry, second only to oil,” Nomadix said.”But there are solutions to this problem, and it starts with being conscious of the products you purchase. To demonstrate how apparel can look great, feel great, and still be completely sustainable, we decided to make the Clean Tee.”

The shirt is available, for a limited time, at a special preorder price of $25. It comes in both men’s and women’s sizes and your choice of white or gray.
