Julie Gilhart, fashion director of Barneys New York, has left the company to “pursue other opportunities,” according to WWD. One of the strongest advocates for sustainable fashion in an industry that is anything but, Gilhart helped launch green design—as well as ethical labels like Loomstate, Rogan, Organic by John Patrick, Alabama Chanin, and Stella McCartney—into the mainstream and luxury markets before it was de rigueur to do so. At a time when terms like “ethical” and “green” were disparaged and ridiculed, Gilhart had only one condition: Each product, no matter how sustainable, had to make the customer feel and look good above all else. “I don’t like calling it eco-fashion,” Gilhart told Ecouterre at the CFDA/Lexus Hybrid Living Eco-Fashion Challenge this month. “It should just be fashion.”
