The basements were rocking in New York City on Wednesday in honor of the 40th anniversary of Earth Day. Ecouterre joined the cool kids in the depths of the Hudson Hotel for eco-fashion superstars Loomstate and Rogan’s epic Earth Day Celebration. The evening culminated in a 40-person drum circle led by Hisham Akira Bharoocha. It was a wild night, made doubly so by a wild performace that left us feeling the primal beats long after we reemerged above ground.

DRUM MAJORS

Rogan Gregory (Rogan) and Scott Mackinlay Hahn (Loomstate) decided to go rogue with their Earth Day bash. They brought people underground for a primal experience to attempt foster a sense of community in the crowd.

“Drums have been part of people coming together for a long time,” Loomstate’s Scott Hahn tells us.

But why a drum circle? “Drums have been part of people coming together for a long time,” Hahn tells Ecouterre. “We want people to leave here not thinking of commercialism or their activism or their advocacy. We want people to feel better and more connected.”

FORGING CONNECTIONS

Gregory concurs: Drums are a primal way of communication that’s as old as the earliest civilizations. “When people didn’t understand why it was raining they got out their drums and called to Mother Nature,” he says, adding that he hopes the coming year will bring a renewed connection to the planet. “I hope this performance inspires people and the message that we’re sending tonight filters out to the masses.”

Message received loud and clear—in fact, we could literally feel it in our bones. As the drummers kept in time with one another, images of Earth flashed rhythmically on a screen above. It was a moving night that dovetailed nicely with the collective missions of the Loomstate and Rogan brands: Be cool, be kind to the Earth, and feel—and look—great along the way.
