If you're looking for some statement-making natural jewelry, you'd be barking up the right tree with Bettula's birch-bark creations. Using fallen tree bark, designer Heather Fagan puts every inch of the shed husk to good use, from its white opalescent epidermis to the dark walnut viscera. The self-taught Detroit designer also embraces rather than hides Ma Nature's subtle touches. Holes made by a snack-happy woodpecker, for instance, become the openings of a cuff. Among the standout pieces is the Bow Necklace ($89) pictured above, a perfect example of how Fagan crafts the familiar from wholly (holey?) unexpected materials.
All of Heather Fagan’s jewelry began life as the body armor of a tree, namely that of the tall and magnificent birch. Sloughed off in fragments, the discarded bark makes for surprisingly beautiful accessories. “The pieces reflect the life and beauty of birch bark,” the Detroit-based designer says. “Every piece of bark is different and the textures and unique markings in the bark may make it difficult or even impossible to duplicate.”
