The vintage Dior gown that Natalie Portman wore to the 84th Academy Awards went under the hammer on Wednesday for an eye-watering $50,000. Portman, the current face of Miss Dior, borrowed the strapless silk-organza number from Rare Vintage in New York City. Upon its return, the dealer placed it on 1stdibs.com, where it was soon snapped up by an anonymous British collector. Christian Dior designed the dress, which is typical of the post-war “New Look” he invented, at the height of his career in 1954. “Natalie wore a dress she fell in love with,” wrote Rare Vintage owner Juliana Cairone on the auction website. “It was the perfect dress on the perfect girl. I think it was also a great tribute to the modernity and timelessness of vintage fashion.”
