Industrial designer (and trained mathematician) Li-Rong Liao has a yen for folding. Whether it’s paper, cardboard, Tyvek, or felt, the recent Pratt Institute graduate delights in creasing, and crimping flat sheets of material into accordion-like three-dimensional forms. As the daughter of a seamstress, it was only a matter of time before Liao turned her attention to garments. Her pleated paper dress in particular is a sight to behold, fanning out like a stiff bell-shape tutu. “A dress has to fit a human body, so the profile is crucial,” she says.
