A mask designed to shield activists from airborne debris, gas attacks, and persecution has become a powerful symbol of Ukraine’s struggle for freedom of speech. Created by Ogilvy & Mather Düsseldorf and Ukraine in support of the Euromaidan Civic Sector protests, the bandana with the trompe l’oeil mouth are now an integral part of the ongoing demonstrations against the Kiev government. Stephen Vogel, chief creative director of Ogilvy & Mather in Germany, describes “Silent Scream” as a “simple and powerful weapon to create attention and give the people their voices back.”

Protestors obscure their faces for myriad reasons, chief among them the fear of government retaliation. But “if you disguise yourself, you lose your voice,” Vogel says.

The mask, on the other hand, combines the blue and yellow of the Ukrainian flag with a simulacra of a screaming mouth that lines up with the protestor’s face when worn. It effectively serves, then, Vogel says, as the “voice of Ukraine.”

“Silent Scream is a symbol,” he adds. “And it´s protection.”
