Chow down on Black Friday. Go on a hike on Black Friday. Knit a sweater on Black Friday. In fact, do whatever you want on Black Friday as long as it’s not waking up before dawn to beat the beejeezus out of someone over cheap stuff you don’t need. ‘Tis the season, says the Story of Stuff Project’s Annie Leonard, not to get trampled. The sustainability advocate and her team have created a one-minute video, set to a classic holiday jingle, that parodies the 24-hour shopping bonanza that’s become a post-Thanksgiving American tradition.

The biggest nationwide shopping event of the year is such a cash cow for retailers that several them are kicking off Black Friday promotions early this year, opening doors as early as 8 p.m. on Thursday. Many Walmart and Target employees will be cutting family celebrations short in order to man cash registers. Sears stores, which were closed on Thanksgiving last year, will open from 8 p.m. on Thursday till 10 p.m. on Friday. Even Lord & Taylor will unlock its Manhattan store from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Turkey Day.

Retailers like Walmart and Target are kicking off Black Friday as early as 8 p.m. on Thursday.

Instead of shopping on Black Friday, take a pledge to choose family over frenzy, suggests Leonard. Or sponsor a striking Walmart worker who’s standing up against low wages and poor conditions. Then, when the day is through, share a photo of what you did on the Story of Stuff Project’s Flickr page. “Let’s show the world how great the Friday after Thanksgiving can be when it’s spent with friends and family,” Leonard says.
