STUDY HALL

At Study NY’s Fall/Winter 2011 show at New York Fashion Week, Ecco Domani winner Tara St. James was no work and all play. Backed by a schoolroom chalkboard, each model trotted down the runway to deliver a crisp, red apple to a desk in front. The scene was set with shape, color, and texture: cocoon-shaped jackets hung open with ease, intricately hand-knit sweaters inspired a second look, and pleated gaucho pants looked ready for a schoolyard rough and tumble.

Designing ethically doesn’t have to inhibit creativity, intoned our schoolmarm. Rather, it allows designers to diversify with innovative textiles and techniques. Study NY’s integration of zero-waste pieces, recycled textiles, organic cotton, and ethically produced handknits all demonstrate St. James’ devotion to thoughtful design. A gold-star effort.
