Timbuk2 is going beyond the three R’s of sustainable design. The California-based company announced Tuesday the launch of a new environmental responsibility initiative to not only reduce, reuse, and recycle, but also to repair and reimagine its iconic messenger bags. As part of its effort, Timbuk2’s “Life Cycle” program has partnered with Yerdle, a “freecycling” platform; iFixit, an online “repair manual for everything”; and upcycling firm TerraCycle. It has also hired a full-time repairs person in its San Francisco headquarters.

THE 5 R’S

Life Cycle’s five pillars allow Timbuk2 bags to “live a full life, now and forever,” according to brand director Lizzy Fallows, by encouraging customers to invest in quality things that last (“reduce”), find new homes for their unwanted bags through Yerdle (“reuse”), keep bags working for the long haul (“repair”), return worn-out bags to Timbuk2 for reprocessing (“recycle”), or create something entirely new from their carryalls (“reimagine”).

“The Timbuk2 Life Cycle is the most responsible thing we can do environmentally—extending the life of our existing products—and we are passionate about the reduce, reuse, repair, recycle, and reimagine aspects of the program,” Fallows adds. “Life Cycle has led to the development of new meaningful partnerships with Yerdle, iFixit, and TerraCycle, and a new full-time hire of a repairs sewer in our San Francisco factory. It’s the program we’re most proud of and we hope our customers find it both useful and inspiring.”
