The John Hopkins suit improves on existing protection in several ways, according to its makers. A single-piece garment, the prototype has less than 10 potential points of contamination, compared with the current suit’s 28.
To help its wearer stay comfortable in hot, humid regions like West Africa, the suit includes a wicking base layer and a battery-powered dry-air cooling system. A rear zipper and cocoon-style removal style makes it easier to doff the garment in less times—5 minutes instead of the usual 20—as well. Patients and care providers can also see each other more clearer through the larger, integrated visor in the hood.
