Yves Saint Laurent is jumping on the green train with a new high-end, special-edition tote made partially from recycled plastic bags. The hand-woven arm candy, dubbed the Muse Two Artisanal Recycled handbag, is based on the French fashion house’s popular Muse Two design. Don’t expect this recycled beauty to pervade the market, however; YSL made only 60 of them.

Retailing for $1,720 a pop, the bags are handcrafted by women artisans in Burkina Faso in West Africa from plastic bags and fair-trade cotton. The Muse Two Artisanal Recycled comes on the heels of YSL’s “New Vintage” range, which exhumed unused fabric from the label’s past collections to create a new line of classic looks.

The bag follows YSL’s “New Vintage” line, which exhumed unused fabric from past collections to create new looks.

Because of its ultra-exclusive release, the carryall is available online only in the U.S. and U.K. (Like pieces of art, they’re all numbered.) We believe in baby steps, but five dozen bags signals—to us, at least—low confidence on the part of YSL and not a push for serious change.

That said, we approve of the retooled Muse Two’s timeless silhouette. (It wouldn’t look out of place with classic beauties like Jackie O.) Perhaps YSL is on to something: forward-thinking fashion with a nod to the good old days. We just hope it makes more.
