Everyone’s talking about the New Frugality, and with a new year now upon us, adding a new twist to a tried-and-true fashion favorites is one of the savviest ways to spruce up an existing wardrobe without spending a lot of money. Designer Zoe Grace Fletcher has concocted a clever system for extending a garment’s life by fastening on hand-knitted embellishments. Useful for dressing up or down clothing, Fletcher’s “Make Do Re-Do Mend” collection of interchangeable pieces can be mixed and matched to accommodate a variety of occasions, seasons, and moods.

Fletcher hand-knits each piece from 100 percent, sustainably sourced British wool, as well as recycled yarns and fibers. The designer views this process as an occasion to slow down the typical fashion cycle, allowing for adjustable ensembles that are limitless in possibilities.

Fletcher’s knits can be mixed and matched for every occasion, season, and mood.

The winner of the 2009 Communication and Innovation Award in the Fashioning the Future student competition, Fletcher is part of a growing fashion movement that is reinventing garb we already own rather than creating something new from scratch. Their message: Refashioning makes ecological sense, making do doesn’t have to mean sacrifice, and frugal can be fun.
