The Odebrecht Award for Sustainable Development awarded Rice University students Joanna Luo, Weijia Song, and Alexander Yuen, with advising professor Neeraj Bhatia, the top prize for the most innovative sustainable architectural, chemical, or engineering idea. Their winning concept presents a bold solution for increasingly scarce natural fuels – a 600 km chain of man-made islands supporting a population of 50,000, crops, and schools. The islands leave no environmental footprint when removed. The top prize grants $40,000 in cash to the students, advising professor and university. In addition, the students receive admission to the process to become an Odebrecht Young Partner or Braskem Associate, highly competitive trainee programs with the global leaders.
