- Phil Pauley Sub biosphere 2London designer <a href="http://www.philpauley.com/concept_design/architectural/sub-biosphere-2/" target="_blank">Phil Pauley</a> is a modern day Jules Verne who has spent the past 20 years designing an <a href="http://inhabitat.com/underwater-hotel-gets-green-light-to-be-constructed-in-the-maldives/" target="_blank">underwater city </a>. For Pauley, Sub-Biosphere 2 is more than just a fantasy - it’s a viable structure he hopes to see built in his lifetime. The self-sustaining, futuristic <a href="http://inhabitat.com/eden-project-giant-bubble-biomes-are-worlds-largest-greenhouse/" target="_blank">biosphere</a> is designed to house 100 inhabitants underwater, and it’s the latest in a slew of projects that aim to ease housing shortages for a growing global population.1
- Phil Pauley Sub biosphere 2Living under the <a href="http://inhabitat.com/farming-could-go-coastal-with-sealeaf-floating-modules/" target="_blank">ocean’s waves</a> may seem like a fantastical concept, but Pauley has designed Sub-Biosphere 2 to be a realistic housing option for the near future.2
- Phil Pauley Sub biosphere 2The network is made up of a Central Support Biome surrounded by eight spherical Living Biomes.3
- Phil Pauley Sub biosphere 2The Central Support Biome controls and monitors life systems within the complex, including fresh air, water, food and electricity as well as atmospheric pressure control. Inside, the system will have a seed bank for growing hydroponic crops to feed the 100 inhabitants.4
- Phil Pauley Sub biosphere 2The Central pod would rise forty stories above water, while additional twenty would be <a href="http://inhabitat.com/underwater-skyscraper-is-a-self-sufficient-city-at-sea/" target="_blank">submerged beneath the sea</a>.5
- Phil Pauley Sub biosphere 2The surrounding individual pods would be split with ten stories above water and ten beneath the surface. The entire complex would be 1,105 feet wide, with anchoring on the sea floor.6
- Phil Pauley Sub biosphere 2Whether Pauley’s underwater world will see the light of day remains to be seen, but in the meantime the design consultant is seeking a publisher for a trilogy of self-penned science fiction books that appropriately take place in a civilization that lives under the sea.7
