Google has revealed the first functional prototype of its new self-driving car, following the debut of the “early mockup” this last May. The shape of the Google’s self-driving car hasn’t changed that much over the last few months, but Google says that the latest prototype now has all of the parts that it needs to drive on the road.

Since the debut of the first mockup earlier this year, Google has been trying out various prototypes to test parts of the self-driving car, but now the latest prototype brings together all of those parts into one car. Visually the biggest differences between the new prototype and the earlier mockup are working headlights and the LIDAR system on the roof that is now smaller and sleeker.

Google plans to begin putting the self-driving car prototype through its paces on test tracks over the holidays and then sometime next year Google plans to start testing it on public roads.
