HWKN’s new dance pavilion will be the very first thing visitors will see when they jump off the ferry at Fire Island Pines, one of the world’s premier gay resorts located on Fire Island, NY. The new wooden structure was designed as a bold and iconic form that replaces the pavilion dance club that was engulfed by a fire last November. HWKN’s Matthias Hollwich, whose name has been popping up all over New York City this year, described the new space: “The building forms intimate public spaces out of a single volume. It is carved and rutted like a piece of driftwood washed ashore by the sea.”
The new and improved Pavilion dance club will host two outdoor terraces along with benches, wide wooden staircases and small retail store fronts that will “activate” the building’s base. The entrance itself has been designed as a set of bleachers that can also be used as a stage, a wedding chapel, a viewing platform or as a spillover space for late-night dancers.
While the new building will have the same envelope and use as the previous Pavilion, the developers claim that the structure’s similarities end there. The renovated club will be connected to a new welcome bar on the first floor and a high-tea terrace by winding loop of stairs. Construction is expected to begin in June and Diller Scofidio + Renfro of High Line fame have been commissioned to takeover the master planning of the remaining FIP Venture structures that were damaged by the far. With new party, lighting and music attractions on offer for this summer, Fire Island Pines has been resurrected from the ashes to become an even more exciting destination than it was before.
