Hyundai just teamed up with Something & Son to unveil the world’s first urban aquaponic farm ‘powered’ by a hydrogen car! Located outside of the London Design Museum, Hyundai’s Fuel Cell Farm seeks to educate the public on the benefits of hydrogen fuel cell technology. The aquaponics farm filters water produced by a ix35 fuel cell vehicle and then uses the H2O to sustain an aquarium full of fish and an edible garden.
Aquaponics is a sustainable farming solution that combines hydroponics (growing plants in water) and aquaculture (raising fish in tanks). Hydrogen fuel cell-powered vehicles are unique because the only emission they release is water vapor. The Hyundai Fuel Cell Farm operates by taking water emitted by the hydrogen-powered Hyundai ix35 and filtering this water into the fish tank. The aquaponics technology then harnesses minerals from the fish waste to grow the plants on the farm.

This installation is an imaginative way to bring alive the huge potential of hydrogen technology and I encourage people to come along to the Design Museum to learn more about what could be the most exciting new industry of the 21st century,” stated Kit Malthouse, Deputy Mayor of London for Business and Enterprise and Chairman of the London Hydrogen Partnership.
Malthouse went on to say: “We are getting London ready for this massive step forward in propulsion technology by supporting businesses to put fuel on the ground, and consumers to buy zero emission vehicles. London has been at the forefront of mobility advances through the centuries and that’s where we want to stay.”
