Today is World Sparrow Day, and all around the planet, people are celebrating these sweet little birds and appreciating their vital work as insect controllers and plant pollinators. My husband and I hand-raised a couple of House Sparrows that we found as babies: Robin was pitched out of the nest when only a few hours old due to foot and wing deformities, and Puck was the only sibling that survived after a neighbor knocked her nest out of his eavestrough. They’re sweet, friendly, affectionate birds, and for Robin’s second birthday, we celebrated with a cake made of bread, nut butter, and seeds. There was also juice.
