Messana re-configured the layout of the existing NYC loft apartment [1] to enlarge the bathroom, which also received a new stone floor and polished waterproof walls to give it the essence of a calm, relaxing spa. The kitchen surfaces were refinished, as were the maple floors, which are now lighter and brighter than they were previously.
A new circular skylight [2] was added to pump daylight into the rejuvenated space and the original staircase leading to the rooftop deck, an old and ugly thing, was replaced it with a shiny new, spiraling stainless steel staircase. This combined with a host of new plantings on the rooftop deck are designed to encourage the homeowner to use the space like a treehouse retreat [3] among the towers.
