Supreme Dalek Halloween Costume Made From Upcycled Trash by Karen Conway
Zephan and his Dad created this Dalek Halloween costume out of random junk that they found in the garage. They bought a bit of red paint, styrofoam balls and duct tape to help them construct the pieces of trash. Dalek’s parts include: cardboard boxes, fruit cups, mixing bowl, garbage can top, catering trays, toilet bowl float, fire starter, toilet paper rolls, paint roller and bird feeder packaging…AND an iPod for the “EXTERMINATE!” sounds.
HOW TO MAKE THIS COSTUME
Step 1:
Use a clean trash can as the Dalek’s body – cover it with painted pieces of cardboard and attach styrofoam balls to the exterior. Cut a hole in the trash can’s lid for the Dalek’s head.
Step 2:
Use a bowl as the Dalek’s head and attach two fruit cups for antennas. Cut holes in a set of catering trays and attach them below the bowl to serve as a view screen.
Step 3:
Attach the helmet to the body and cut holes for the Dalek’s implements of destruction – a fire starter and a paint roller.
Step 4:
Queue up an iPod with the Dalek’s EXTERMINATE sound and go wage intergalactic war!
This costume definitely doesn’t look like it was made from junk. Hooray for upcycling!
Junk?? that’s crazy talk! Great craftsmanship on this one, well done and good luck!
And just to clarify the ‘how-to’ part since I sent in a humorous one instead. The body is just a cardboard box (complete with the recycling logo on bottom). We just used the top part of an old garbage pail as the connecting section.
Here’s our original instructions:
1. Look up “How to Build a Dalek” online
2. Freak out…there’s actual blueprints at http://www.aceldama.com/~tomr/media/dalek/blueprints/
3. Ask master carpenter, bridge designer, house builder and old Dr. Who fan Grandpa to help. Grandpa also looks up instructions online and declines.
4. Armed with no budget and a free Saturday, scour the garage for anything that might work.
