Here are 6 sure to please gifts for those bold, brash busybodied boys in your life. A few are limited edition or require overseas shipping, but if you get your hands on one of these gifts we're sure your boy will be a happy camper.
1. POOR TOYS 20 € – Poorex
This set of toys made from Beechwood are a retro-throwback to when chores meant actually doing something physical. These days we incinerate, tumble-dry and Swiffer our way through home care, but there was once a time when the sink had to be blocked with a stopper in order to do dishes, clothes had to hung on a line to by dried, and cleaning the floors involved a bucket of water and sturdy brush. It was those experiences that inspired these toys.
2. SPACE FLEET $32 – Papafoxtrot
“You can’t fault the Dragon for being timid; not content with being the first private space vehicle to survive a return from orbit, it is also designed to potentially be the first commercial vehicle to reach Mars. In the meantime, it will have to settle for shuttling up to seven crew and cargo to the ISS in place of the recently retired Space Shuttle. In development by SpaceX since 2005, Dragon should be embarking on its first mission in 2012.” – Papafoxtrot
3. SQUARE WATER BOTTLE $40 – David Mayer
“My goal is really to get people thinking about bottles not as these clunky, utilitarian pieces, but as statements–in the same way women think about handbags and shoes and that we all think about our clothes, watches and sunglasses,” he tells Co.Design. The bottles are finally available for pre-order at Clean Bottle, and will ship in December (hopefully in time for the holidays).
4. IKONIK COLLABORATION – Mingo Lamberti
“Ikonik™ is our take on the original steel locker. Fully modular, flexible, durable, and available in a variety of prints and colours, Ikonik solves a wide range of storage challenges. – Raw Studios
“We met Raw at a design fair last year and were bouncing around when they asked us to create original illustrations for their ikonik range. They allowed us the freedom we wanted and have grown to love.” – Mingo Lamberti
5. DRAWN BY INSTINCT $40 – Tiffany Bozic
“Having grown up on a farm in Arkansas, she was inspired by the natural world at an early age. Blending her external observations with the internal world has led her to refine a distinct style. She is said to be inspired by John James Audubon and Ernst Haeckel, but dives more deeply into the imaginary and darker aspects of the natural world. Bozic views the making of art as a kind of therapeutic process – a way to make sense of the world, of her relationship to life as it unfolds, of its power over us, and perhaps most importantly, of our power over it.” – Artist Statement
6. WOODEN LEGO FIGURE 40 € – MALET
Milled from beautiful wood, each of these handmade toys is unique and can be articulated in much the same way a standard Lego figure can. Malet’s figures tower over their standard-issue versions inviting kids to create cardboard block cities to match this new scale. “Wooden Art toys handmade in limited edition of 20 pieces (11cm). Each toy is unique and numbered under the feet of the character for collectors. Wood and cardboard for a natural packaging.”
