It’s certainly evident that Legos really can go, in the words of Buzz Lightyear, “to infinity and beyond!” We have seen countless awe-inspiring masterpieces that have been created with the colorful little bricks, from life-sized homes and fun-loving furniture to contemporary villas and endangered animals. And now PIXAR animator Angus MacLane joins the ranks of our Lego admiration with his amazing CubeDudes — the trademark marvels that he deftly wields out of Legos. Iconic toys and fictional characters from both today and yesteryear are immortalized in CubeDude form — from Toy Story‘s Buzz Lightyear and Jessie to Star Wars heroes R2D2 and C-3PO, CubeDudes will appeal to kids and fans of all ages! MacLane’s countless creations also include movie dudes, such as the characters from Ghostbusters and Spinal Tap to TV dudes like the cast of 30 Rock and the Incredible Hulk! Read on for insight in MacLane’s design process.

According to an interview with MacLane, featured on BricksABillion, MacLane’s inaugural CubeDude characters were from G.I. Joe. The very first CubeDude he ever made was Snake Eyes, and MacLane’s personal favorite from the CubeDude family is Robocop. He says, “Robocop is probably my favorite character. His design just ended up working out so well.”

Of his CubeDude creation process MacLane offers, “When I had a moment here and there I chip away at a few at a time. I’ll have the body of one ‘Dude and a head of another that I will be working on at the same time. It takes me about 10-15 minutes to make one CubeDude and I average about two a day.”

MacLane admits he could use a little help from Lego when it comes to the color palette of their bricks. He tells BricksABillion, “There are a ton of characters that I want to build that have color schemes that Lego hasn’t made or hasn’t made a ton of. More purple would really help me out in making villains such as Lex Luthor, The Joker, Grimace, etc.”

For now, we’ll continue to be green with envy at all of the CubeDudes MacLane has been able to make!
