Home Grown Books recently debuted their third set of early reading children’s books at the 2013 New York International Gift Fair. The new 8 book series, written by Kyla Ryman, features oil paintings by artist Sara Woster. Woster splits her time between an apartment in Brooklyn, NY and a cabin in Northern Minnesota, and both highly contrasting locales inspire her painting and storytelling. With regard to her collaboration with Home Grown Books, Woster offers, “…they’re not trying to dumb down anything for kids. They’re treating them with respect and acknowledging they can appreciate good art just like anybody else can.”

In an effort to encourage whole language reading, each page of a Home Grown Book contains between one word of text to two short sentences. Home Grown Books are printed in New York City via renewable wind-powered energy, on recycled paper with no VOC vegetable inks. See a video of artist Sara Woster painting the unique and original artwork found in these inspiring books, and learn more about her process after the jump.
