Slings and wraps have become an essential, intimate, hands-free way to carry babies and little ones, a fact recognized the world over. Brea Albulov, a mom of two and founder of Hope Carried, knows their value firsthand: she made her first ring sling when her children were small, to help facilitate nursing and carrying around a little one while chasing her older child. Now she wants to inspire other mamas and daddies to keep their babies close, all while empowering women in the Metro Detroit area through sustainable and financially beneficial employment. With vividly colored modal baby wraps and linen or silk ring slings, you can go from walking the dog to shmoozing a cocktail party, all while conveniently wearing baby. Hope Carried has sold over 1,200 rings and wraps, and this inspiring company recently launched a Kickstarter campaign to hire more women and provide them with the opportunity for steady and fulfilling employment.
Hope Carried works with organizations like Jewish Family Services and Freedom House to find and employ women who, due to cultural restrictions or lack of education, are typically excluded from the workforce. Hope Carried trains and employs these women, several of whom have immigrated from countries including Iran, Afghanistan, and Syria, to make the high-quality wraps and rings, providing them with an income while working from home. The company currently has four women consistently creating Hope Carried products, but they hope to add another eight employees using Kickstarter funding.
After toying with several styles, Hope Carried honed in on the best one-size-fits-all fit, one that won’t put unnecessary stress on a parent’s neck or loosen and slip down the arm. The fabrics were also carefully chosen: the modal is eco-friendly, light and breathable, while linen is strong, antibacterial, and made from sustainable spun flax. The silk ring slings feel and look glamorous for a special occasion, but they are actually practical enough for regular use and nearly waterproof. The wraps hold up to 25 pounds, while the slings can hold up to 35 pounds. And because mini-mes love to be like their parents, consider welcoming your older child into big siblinghood with his or her own doll-sized ring sling or wrap. Hope Carried’s motto is “Wear the babies. Change the World.” We like to call that multitasking with a cause.
