Just ask your child if they know what a time capsule is and they will bubble with excitement. The very idea of placing family objects in a time capsule to be buried or hidden away until a later date is so much fun for kids. Making a family time capsule is a great way to talk about the experience your family has enjoyed together over the years. While making our family time capsule, my son wanted to include items that he cherished - a stuffed animal, a favorite book, and a handful of organic candies. I wanted to incorporate photos from our family's favorite vacations and a drawing that my son made for me. However, you can put anything that your children requests in the family time capsule, then hide it away to be opened at a later time. Read on to learn how to make your own family time capsule - everything you need is in your recycling bin!
What you will need:
Step 1: Prepare the Time Capsule
Remove any stickers on the container, then thoroughly clean and dry the in and outside. I asked my son to look throughout our home and his bedroom for items that he would like to contribute to the time capsule.
Step 2: Select a Date
Give your child the paper and markers and ask them to decorate the sign for your time capsule. Decide on a date that you want to revisit the time capsule and have them write that on the sign too. Have your child tape the sign to the front of the capsule.
Step 3: Fill the Time Capsule
Step 4: Say Good-Bye for Now
Step 5: Hide the Time Capsule Away
Since we are moving in a couple of months, we didn’t want to bury our time capsule outside. Instead we found a spot in top of one of the closets to hide our time capsule away.
