There is nothing more comforting, filling and soothing than a Mexican hot chocolate. Perfect for a cold morning or just anytime you fancy a chocolate treat, this easy Mexican-style drink will instantly put a smile on your face and on everybody else’s. We know bittersweet and hot sounds like a strange taste combination but trust us, they go together beautifully.
Rich in both texture and flavor, it takes only a pan, less than 10 minutes and a few ingredients to prepare it. Just medium-heat some almond milk (or other kind of vegan milk), add chunks of your favorite dark chocolate and spice it up with cayenne pepper and slices of chili pepper if you dare. Enjoy it hot or cold, garnish with cinnamon, nutmeg or coconut cream, but make sure to keep your kids out of the chilies at all times.
1. Gather the ingredients
- 2 cups of almond milk
- 1.7 ounces of dark chocolate (or to taste)
- 1 tsp cayenne pepper
- 1 chili pepper
2. Heat up the milk
Heat the almond milk (here is how to make it from scratch) in a pan over low-medium heat until it starts bubbling.
3. Add the chocolate
Roughly chop the chocolate with your hands and add it to the milk. Stir.
4. Add the chili pepper
For extra heat add one or more slices of chili and let them sit as you do with a bay leaf. To avoid irritation you could grab a chili from the stem and cut it with a pair of scissors.
5. Add the cayenne pepper
Add a spoonful of cayenne pepper into the mix. At this point you could turn the heat off.
6. Stir some more and serve
Stir some more, until the chocolate completely melts and everything is one sweet and hot yummy drink. Garnish with cinnamon, nutmeg, coconut cream or even extra cayenne pepper on top, if you dare!
