Finding fun ways to get more vegetables into your children's diet is always great. Especially, when those vegetables taste so yummy, children will be begging you for another. Sweet Pickles fit this bill - not only are they fun to eat, they are a super fun way to spend a spring morning with your children. Read on to learn how to make your own organic sweet pickles with your little ones.
What you will need:
- organic cucumbers
- organic sweet onions
- 1 cup organic apple cider vinegar
- 1/8 cup organic sugar
- 1/4 teaspoon ground turmeric
- 1/2 teaspoon mustard seed
Step 1: Gather Your Ingredients
This is the fun part – take your children to your local farmer’s market or natural grocer and have them choose organic cucumbers and sweet onions for your recipe. Then, gather all of the other ingredients in your kitchen at home.
Step 2: Boil It Up
Over medium heat bring the organic apple cider vinegar, salt, sugar, turmeric and mustard seed to a boil – let it cook for about 5 minutes.
Step 3: Slice It Up
Help your little ones slice cucumbers and onions into long wedges or discs.
Step 4: Pack It Up
Arrange cucumber and onion wedges into reusable glass mason jars.
Step 5: Fill It Up
Pour the hot liquid over the cucumbers and onions.
Step 6: Seal It Up
Tightly close each mason jar.
Step 7: Refrigerate It and Enjoy
Place the jars in the refrigerator for a couple of day to allow the cucumbers to magically turn into pickles. Smile as your children gobble up sweet pickles that they helped make in their own kitchen!
