Who would have thought that making your own milk was easy, quick, inexpensive and didn't involve living on a farm? Made from just three ingredients: sunflower seeds, water and your choice of sweetener, this “milk” is a nutritious alternative to animal milk and best of all, it's cruelty- free. Perfect for your morning latte or with crispy cereals and fruit, it only takes 5 minutes to prepare this delicious creamy drink.
With a full round nutty flavor, depending on how much water you add, you will achieve a more liquid or creamy texture. A nutritious alternative to cow's milk, sunflower seeds are full of linoleic acid, Vitamins E and B and they are very high in Omega-6 fatty acid. Make some raw, vegan sunflower seed milk today!
1. Gather the ingredients
- 1 cup of (organic unroasted) sunflower seeds
- 2 cups of filtered water
- 1 tsp of local honey
2. Wash the seeds
Wash the sunflower seeds using a colander under running water to get rid of any dust or dirt.
3. Activate the seeds
Put the seeds in a bowl and leave them to soak overnight or a few hours, to activate them and get more out of them.
4. Drain the seeds
Drain the seeds with a colander and notice how some seeds opened in the middle.
5. Process the seeds
Place the seeds and two cups of filtered water in a plastic jug, smashing the mix with a food processor or use a blender.
6. Drain the mix
Use a colander to drain the mix and collect the sunflower milk with a bowl or glass underneath. The nutty paste which remains is great for making sauces, vegan cheese or soups, so don’t toss it!
7. Make it tastier
You can make the milk sweeter and tastier by adding a small tablespoon of organic honey (although most vegans do not eat honey), so other sweetener alternatives include brown sugar, coconut sugar, maple syrup, vanilla or some cinnamon.
Perfect for your morning Fair Trade coffee, this raw vegan sunflower milk will help you start your day in a yummy, homemade, healthy and cruelty-free fashion!
