What are Kodama Zomes?
Kodama Zomes, invented by revolutionary architect Buckminster Fuller, are a combination of art, structure, engineering and architecture. Each swing is a hammock and lounge chair in one. These interactive pieces of art have a shape that allows for a comfortable and roomy cocoon. You can down lay down flat in the middle of the swing or recline against the side. The swing offers an unrestricted pendulum motion.
Kodama Zomes are made of metal, webbing, and wood. Kodama Zomes use gravity as a structural element, and the structure’s webbing resists only tension forces, while the metal resists the compression and bending forces. The hardware connectors are marine grade stainless steel and steel alloy metal support rings, for strength and high resistance to corrosion while the diagonal straps are polyester webbing that encases and supports the zome. The polyester webbing is noted as being similar in strength to the typical nylon webbing of rock climbing and life-safety equipment, but with the added benefit of higher abrasion resistance, sunlight UV resistance, and mold/mildew resistance when wet. The mattress and cushions are made of custom-fit foam and upholstered with Sunbrella® outdoor fabric for ease of cleaning and years of durability.
How big is a zome?
The Pod zome is the perfect size for 1-3 people, while larger sized zomes are custom built and start at 7? bottom diameter to fit a queen size bed amount of family members.
How do they hang?
Kodama Zomes can be hung from a heavy and sturdy tree branch or other overhead beam. To make it easy, Kodama stocks a variety of hanging accessories, including rope, shackles, tree slings, carabiners and swivels. For families lacking trees or an otherwise sturdy beam, there’s a Curved Tripod Stand available that can be used freely by the pool, on the beach or in your yard or home.
Sun shades, rain covers with a zippered door and mosquito netting are extras available for the zomes, and make your relaxing swing that much more enjoyable.
