Another day, another health malady linked to BPA exposure. Studies in rodents have shown that early-life exposure to bisphenol A (BPA) can wreak havoc on the prostate, enhancing the prostate’s susceptibility to cancer as rodents age. Now a new study has taken a closer look at these findings to see if the same is true of humans. In order to determine if human, not just rodent males are affected by BPA, researchers used human prostate epithelial stem-like cells cultured from prostates of young, disease-free donors, ran various tests on them and found that indeed, even low level exposure to BPA during development may make men more susceptible to prostate cancer later in life. Not good news for guys, considering that prostate cancer is already the second leading cause of cancer-related mortality in men in the United States. Increasing evidence is being gathered that low level exposure to BPA can result in multiple adverse health outcomes, including emotional problems, obesity, behavioral impairment, infertility, metabolic disorders and a higher risk of various cancers, so this new research isn’t all that shocking, though, something to be aware of if healthier boys are our goal. It’s especially critical to note that the developmental stage has been identified as being particularly sensitive to BPA exposures, so reducing your exposure while pregnant and reducing your baby’s exposure while he’s very young, is very important.
