What could make us love PlanToys, one of our favorite green toy companies, even more? Their introduction of a new, greener material. Last week at the 2012 American International Toy Fair, PlanToys introduced PlanWood. The new eco-friendly material is a non-toxic composite wood made using the 2 tons of sawdust produced in their toy factory daily. The company is both reintroducing old toys in the new material and launching new ones. Read on to learn more about PlanWood and see several of the toys that are coming soon.
You may wonder how a composite wood can be more eco-friendly than a sustainable real wood. PlanToys has traditionally manufactured their toys from renewable rubberwood that is no longer producing rubber. The new PlanWood is made from the 2 tons of sawdust that the toy factory produces daily, truly using every part of the rubberwood tree. With some pressure molding they were able to create a high density fiber, which is strong and durable. Because of the amount of pressure applied to the composite wood during production, very little glue is needed to bind the sawdust together. Less than 1% of formaldehyde-free E-zero glue is used and it isn’t treated with any other heavy chemicals.
Another plus of PlanWood is that organic colorant can be added during the composite process, which is more eco-friendly than the water-based paints and finishes PlanToys uses on its rubberwood toys. Parents will also love that the new PlanWood toys can safely go in the dishwasher. So if you have a little one who loves putting everything in her mouth, you’ll be able to keep her toys clean easily.
You’ll find old favorites like the Dancing Alligator, a classic that originally launched in 1999. The funny little creature delights tot’s as they pull it – it’s head and tail move up and down, clicking and clacking as it goes. Also for the toddler set, you’ll find sorting and stacking toys and a Pull-Along Snail now in PlanWood. The 3+ set will love the updated Road & Rail set. Now in PlanWood, train tracks can be double sided to accomodate rail on one side and road on the other. The 3-story Play House is also new and comes complete with two dolls and lots of furniture. A 2-sided mat doubles as the front yard, and when folded up, the side of the house. Finally, PlanToys is introducing two food sets in PlanWood, which allows for more details such as the grains in an onion. Both the Assorted Fruit Set and the Assorted Vegetable Set each come with five pieces of produce that can be sliced, a knife and a cutting board.
