Instead of shopping, it’s time to get shwopping. Shwopping, a UK campaign launched by Joanna Lumley of Absolutely Fabulous and Marks & Spencer encourages parents to salvage, not toss used children’s clothing every time they purchase a new piece of clothing. The initiative, already in full swing has saved “5,000 tons of clothing” — or about 20 huge jumbo jets worth of clothing. Fibre2fashion reports that M&S spokesperson Mark Sumner says, “Too many baby clothes are going to waste. We want to give old and unused clothes a future and therefore encourage all parents to shwop unwanted baby clothes rather than thrown them in the bin, so they can be reused, recycled or resold via our partners Oxfam.” The goal of Shwopping is to not only get clothing to people who need it, but to help reduce the amount of clothing that ends up in UK landfills.
