Young automobile aficionados no longer need to wait to be legal driving age to experience the electric car phenomenon. The much-buzzed-about Tesla brand joined forces with Radio Flyer to create a mini Model S that incorporates the style elements of the full-size version yet puts a youthful spin on the design. Featuring working headlights, MP3 player-compatible speakers, and authentic Model S colors such as red, black or dark blue, kids can ride along just like mom or dad and even plug in their car to recharge. The Model S for kids is powered by Flight Speed lithium ion technology, which means kids can drive longer and faster, and they don’t have to wait as long between their road adventures as the lithium ion battery charges three times faster than typical batteries. Touting a “spacious interior” and a front trunk with plenty of storage space, the car comes with variable speed options: 3 mph for “beginners” and 6 mph for “more advanced drivers.” You know, since your three year-old will be at a serious disadvantage if he can’t zoom past the other kids on your cul-de-sac. Unfortunately, tots can’t take their buddies for a ride, since the Tesla S for Kids is a single-seater. Many powered ride-on toys cost around $250-$350, but the high-class features such as souped up silver wheels, a custom-sized car cover, and a customizable license plate bump up this kiddie car to a cool $500. While we can’t help but roll our eyes at yet another powered car for little ones (especially one that sees the need for kids to listen to their favorite tunes while cruising), we recognize that an electric mini car with a long-lasting rechargeable battery that’s crafted from quality materials is perhaps a better, greener option than most. The car, which is suitable for kids ages 3-8 and up to 81 pounds) is available for pre-order and will ship in June.
