The colAR app for iPad and iPhone is certainly not anything like your grandparent's coloring book. Developed by the HIT Lab NZ and made available by Putkeo Limited, the mobile program lets kids and parents print out their own pages, color them in, and then magically transform the images into 3D figures that move! By using normal color pencils, crayons, or markers, kids make sure they stay within the lines and create clear blocks of pigment inside the design. Then they can hover their mobile device over the page and watch as their creations pop up and fly, dance, and twirl before their eyes.
The colAR app is free to download and offers pages that are both free or available for purchase. Kids can choose from birds, dolls, planes, and dragons, all able to be customized with their own colors and patterns. After they are finished crafting their images in the real world, they can use a mobile device to engage with a technological platform. A wonderful way to help children to expand their creative skills and become comfortable with electronic devices, the colAR app is a novel new addition to playtime. Just be careful not to let your kids catch you hogging the iPad to animate your own coloring masterpieces!
