Schools in America are more toxic than ever. Luckily, there are groups like Malibu Unites – a coalition of concerned parents, teachers, community members, scientists, public figures and environmental groups from across the U.S. who are fed up with toxic schools. Malibu Unites was formed in October of 2013, after three local teachers were diagnosed with thyroid cancer within a six-month period, and other teachers experienced physical symptoms that may be linked to toxins, such as migraines, hair loss, respiratory problems, and rashes. According to Malibu Unites, soil on the Malibu High School (MHS) campus tested positive for nine toxins in 2011, including, PCBs, lead, DDT, Chlordane and additional pesticides known to be carcinogenic, which prompted teachers from MHS and Juan Cabrillo Elementary (JC) to ask that their classrooms and soil be further tested for toxins. As a parent or community member you CAN advocate for safer, less toxic schools, but that means taking action just like the community of Malibu has done with Malibu Unites.
